Have you been named as an executor of a will or just want to know what the process of estate administration from a practical standpoint is all about? Then read on!

This book is for meant to help those who have been named as an executor, for someone who has asked a loved one in to be in charge of their estate or for one who just generally wants to know what the process of closing an estate is all about. It has some technical elements, like how to sell or transfer stock and – but the real value of the book is setting expectations. It includes advice such as; making the funeral arrangements, dividing up the jewelry and selling the furniture. More importantly, it gives the first time executor enough information so they can be conversant when talking to lawyers, accounts and beneficiaries. That’s the main reason this book is different than others – it has more of the practical versus the legalese. It basically helps someone who’s never been an executor before or hasn’t been exposed to the process and needs a little bit of help to carry out the wishes of a loved one. It’s about things like; how long the process will take, fairness with beneficiaries, what curveballs might be thrown your way and what some of the pitfalls that might be encountered. For example, you should be aware that some insurance companies will drop homeowners insurance or not honor the policy if the house is vacant for an extended period of time. Again, that’s where the value of this book is, eliminating some of those first time “unknowns” of being the executor of an estate. There is also a short “What should I do if?” chapter to answer questions such as; what if someone else wants to be the executor, if someone sues the estate, if the beneficiaries don’t want to sign the refunding bonds, etc…

In addition to the practical help, this book can help save you some fees when you administer the estate. You can close bank accounts, close insurance policies, transfer stock, send refunding bond notices, and file the will for probate by yourself. All those things are not hard to do, they’re mostly administrative in nature and can be handled by a layperson. The idea is to let the lawyers focus on their areas of expertise while you focus on those administrative items.

I was the Executor of my uncle's estate without the benefit of a book such as this. While the concept of being an executor is not difficult, the actual execution of wills and estates quickly become overwhelming if one hasn't done it before. Having been through that, this book covers all the important details. It covers from the time you learn that you have been asked to be an executor, the funeral arrangements of the deceased, time considerations, when to call in accountants and lawyers and many other issues a first time executor may not have thought of. I have been named executor once again. I bought this book and have been pleasantly pleased with its scope and plain language approach to the last stage of life - death. I recommend it.

A good overview. You will have to do some other research on the internet as far as State and Federal requirements, but this gives a good general overview. There are also tips on dealing with beneficiaries. I found this book to be useful.
I am named as executor for my parents estate. I had no idea what was involved, thus my reason for buying this book. I will refer to it many times in the coming months to get a better idea of everything I need to be thinking about as I prepare to assume my role as executor.
This is a must-read book for anyone tasked with this role as a resource for reference or just getting an idea of what is coming your way as an executor.
I have read several chapters over and over. Very helpful. Easy to retrieve information. Military form information was also appreciated.
I purchased this to help ground me as I helped my wife who was her brother's executor. It covers the most important topics in a readable style. If you need to serve as an executor and you know nothing about probate or getting organized (and you better get really organized) this little book is an excellent resource. I gave it 4 stars only because I needed some more detail that I did find in other resources, and because the index is pretty lean.
This is a good guide for simple situations but not as detailed as the much more expensive books. It would say it is definitely recommended for people wondering what would happen if someone near and dear passes away including themselves and then decide if you need the more elaborate guides depending on the situation. Probate is definitely not a trivial process and is further complicated when the deceased has no will (as I am now painfully finding out first hand). Buying this book is relatively small investment in the big headaches you can prevent later on when the time comes. The time to plan is now, now, now. And don't put off having a will thinking that you don't own much so why bother. The process or drafting the will forces you to think about ALL that you will leave behind and guaranteed you will find something significant.
Having just lost my mother and looking at a house full of 87 years of stuff I felt completely overwhelmed by the prospect of all that had to be done. I didn't know where to start. This book, and probably others like it, should be on everyone's required reading list if you are facing the prospect of losing loved ones and need some idea of what to expect. For me, being the only child, the book has been a great source of information and guidance.
Although I am not a fan of wills, this book is a great reference to help you understand all the things you need to do when someone in your family passes.

Well written and easy to understand terms without living in and knowing the legal business. The appendix was very useful as well.

Still I recommend getting a Revocable Trust, like this one - Build Your Own Living Revocable Trust A Guide to Creating a Living Revocable Trust
